Thanks, Bonnie. Yes #3 is a tough one for people, counter-intuitive as you say, because the entire mindset of many people is to promote themselves as the most skilled person--while their skills are only meaningful as they solve the problems of the hiring organization. Plus, what may seem like an obvious connection to the job hunter often needs to be spelled out to the interviewer--just why is your experience doing X applicable to what we do here?

Excellent article. So many job hunters have misconceptions about the entire hiring process, and all 4 points hit the target on what they're doing wrong. I think #3 is especially important, because it seems counter-intuitive to candidates preparing to answer interview questions about "me."

It kind of seems that this could be the line between optimists and pessimists too. Thanks for the article. I think that I tend to only look for what I'm looking for rather than what is there. I'll try to open my eyes!

What creates job opportunities is the fact that there is a 30% turnover rate in executive positions. This does not mean executives are necessarily getting terminated, they could be getting transferred, promoted, leave for another opportunity, the company could be purchased and re-managed or the company could be expanding domestically or internationally or just be re-arranging the deck chairs. In any case the national average is a turnover rate of 30%, which means if you look at 100 companies and an average transition time of 120 days there is approximately 10 job openings at any given time. This is often referred to as the “hidden or non-published job market.”

Nothing to worry or get nervous, just be confident and never tell any lie.. answer what you know.. are the first principles while attending an Interview. I had lot of experience in this area, so collected a big list of interview questions and answers sites (more than 220 sites) on wide variety of areas. This doesn't cover just interview questions but also has information related to how to dress, how and what to ask the person who is interviewing you like if it is HR, you might want to know about the work environment, about the overtime rules, about the holiday structure, any medical benefits, insurance coverages etc.,. Thought it will be useful to all, so sharing them at the below link -- might be of some help to you... today and even in future..

Gary--I plan to update more often again starting this month. I'll keep in mind this topic--how to use your time well and creatively in the job search. One key point--while you don't want to put in busywork time, as I indicated in the article, you do want to keep up momentum. That sense is hard to regain. Maybe I should write more on that?
